Areas of Practice: Agriculture, Will/PA/Estate Planning and administration, Business
Paul Courey is a native of the Town of Tilbury and has lived there and in nearby Tilbury North Township all his life.
He started his working career as a farmer, but after nearly 20 years took up the study of law as a career change, although he still helps operate the family farm. In twelve years as a member of Municipal Council for Tilbury North Township, now Lakeshore, including six as Reeve (mayor), and nine years on Essex County Council, he has a wealth of experience with managing an organization, dealing with people, and solving varied problems. From that experience, plus running his own businesses for 50 years, he has developed a thorough understanding of many issues, especially those facing rural clients.
In his specialized area of practice under the Drainage Act, Paul has represented municipalities and property owners across Ontario before the Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Appeal Tribunal, the Ontario Drainage Referee and in the Superior Court of Justice and Divisional Court. A rural and business background gives Paul a unique expertise in land use planning law, municipal law, and real property law, particularly as they affect owners of rural land.
Called to the Bar in 1992 at the age of 41, he has had over 30 years to grow his practice across Essex -Windsor, Chatham-Kent, and far beyond.
Outside the office, Paul enjoys farming, local history, including the restoration of two log homes. He volunteers for numerous organizations and associations, as a way to contribute to the community that he and his ancestors have called home for well over a century.
